LRS members and guests had a very interesting evening on 23rd March when there were not one but two talks, from two different Brians:

1.  "Low Cost Microwaves" by Brian Flynn GM8BJF

Brian described how to get up and running receiving 10GHz signals using consumer electronic devices at low cost ~£20 and without any metalwork or soldering!

2.  "WSPR" by Brian Howie GM4DIJ

Map of stations that automatically reported on WSPRnet the GM3HAM signal transmitted during meeting.

WSPR stands for Weak Signal  Propagation Reporting. It's a low-power beacon-like mode used to probe radio propagation paths and report the findings to an Internet database - WSPRnet. The short talk described how it works and there was a live demonstration, both receive and transmit, with the QRP (2W) GM3HAM 20m signal heard and reported-back from all over Europe.
