Bob Thomson of APSS (Aviation Preservation Society, Scotland) described the recreation of a 100+ year old plane design: The Sopwith Strutter 1 1/2. The Strutter came before the more famous Sopwith Camel and had a close relationship with this part of the world.

Bob talked about the plane and how it was recreated and the obvious issues that face building a 100 year old design with particular attention being applied to the electrical issues along with how radio was incorporated into the reconstruction.

After his talk, Bob was presented with a donation from the LRS to the APSS preservation fund.

Many thanks to Bob for a most interesting talk and for allowing us to show his slides on the website.

The original electrical system was very simple, if not crude!

Of necessity the electrical system in the reconstructed aircraft is more complex

The padding around the windscreen provided protection for the pilot in the event of a sudden stop.

The original radio equipment was a spark transmitter for morse code.

A modern transceiver had to be used in the recreated aircraft.
