Mike Gloistein GM0HCQ traced the development of Antarctic communications from Morse Code to the World Wide Web in his talk on 19th June 2012 at the Museum of Communication in Burntisland. Mike joined the British Antarctic Survey as a Radio Officer in 1990 and has been ‘South’ every year since then. He was awarded the Polar Medal by Her Majesty the Queen in 2004 and with the advent of modern communications, now has the additional responsibility of maintaining all the washing machines on board the Royal Research Ship James Clark Ross! Formal meetings of the Lothians Radio Society will resume after the summer break on Wednesday 12th September 2012. In the meantime, we have been having our regular Summer Pub Nights on the normal club meeting dates of the 2nd & 4th Wednesdays at "wee" Bennet's Bar, Morningside.
The first Pub Night on 11th July was attended by Alan GM3PSP, Vic JA5VQ, Pete GM4BYF, Tommy GM4DCL, Peter GM4DTH, Brian GM8BJF and Colin GM4HWO.
The second Pub Night on 25th July was attended by Alan GM3PSP, Vic GM3OWU, Brian GM8BJF, Vic JA5VQ, Tommy GM1GEQ, Briain GM8PKL, Peter GM4DTH, Colin GM4HWO, Melvyn GM4HYR and Stuart MM3TZP.
The third Pub Night on 8th August was attended by Alan GM3PSP, Vic JA5VQ, John GM8OTI, Brian GM8BJF, SWL Bruce, Peter GM4BYF, Briain GM8PKL and Peter GM4DTH.
The fourth and final Pub Night on 22nd August was attended by Alan GM3PSP, Vic JA5VQ, Peter GM4DTH and Melvyn GM4HYR.

The annual Lothians Radio Society Summer Barbecue was held on Wednesday 20th June 2012, once again graciously hosted by retiring LRS President Pete Bates GM4BYF and his XYL Kay GM6KAY at their home at Fairmilehead. Report with 16 photographs.

14th June 2012 - LRS Operating GS4WAB in Olympic Torch Event

Peter GM4DTH operating GS4WAB on 40m.
The Lothians Radio Society operated Special Event Station GS4WAB for the WAB Olympic Torch Event on Thursday 14th June 2012 from the QTH of Pete GM4BYF at Fairmilehead. Over 400 QSOs were made, principally on 40m. The Olympic Torch then continued its journey towards London for the opening of the Olympic Games on 27th August, with other local clubs hosting Special Event stations along the route. The GM3HAM/P UHF-Microwave Contesters 2012 planning strategy in the Gatehouse Conference Centre (aka the Masonic Arms)
Last weekend, 5th - 6th May 2012, members of the GM3HAM/P Contest Group of the Lothians Radio Society again took part in the RSGB UHF-Microwave Contest. Our location was on a hilltop above Gatehouse of Fleet in Kirkcudbrightshire where we have operated many times in the past. Conditions were good and so was the weather, although cold! At the meeting of the Lothians Radio Society on Wednesday 9th May 2012, well-known Scottish DXer Chris Tran ZL1CT / GM3WOJ described his single-operator DXpedition to the island of Niue (OC-040) in the South Pacific from 21st October to 20th December 2011. Using the callsign ZK2V Chris made 35,686 QSOs from this rare DX entity. Report in preparation.
