11th December 2019 - LRS Christmas Curry at the Gurkha

Following last year's very successful curry at the Gurkha Cafe with its distinctive Nepalese menu at 25-27 Cockburn Street (click for info), we shall return there for the 2019 event on Wednesday 11 December.
PLEASE NOTE - DATE IS SHOWN WRONGLY AS 17 DEC IN RADCOM-DECEMBER
The table is booked from 7:30pm and we shall order at 8:00pm sharp. Drinks will be pay-as-you-go and the food bill will be divided equally.
We shall gather for pre-dinner drinks from 7:00pm at Weatherspoons Booking Office bar on Waverley Bridge, outside the Waverley Station.

At the meeting of the LRS on 13 Nov 2019 Jack Hood GM4COX, who has been a leading light of the West of Scotland Amateur Radio Society since its inception in 1970, talked about "SOTA & 13cm Escapades".
Following the successful launch in the summer of 2017 of the introduction of 13cm SOTA to the Scottish amateur fraternity by Andy MM0FMF of LRS & Jack, he described developments over the last 2 years.

Jack and Andy were awarded the Jack Wylie Trophy for their pioneering activities in 13cm SOTA.
Andy (R) has held the trophy for the last 6 months and now handed it to Jack at this LRS meeting.

30th Oct 2019 - Rehabilitating Telecomms in Afghanistan - Nick Peckett G4KUX / YA4F

At the meeting of the LRS on 30th Oct 2019. Nick Peckett G4KUX/YA4F talked about Rehabilitating Telecommunications in Afghanistan.
Nick lived and worked in Afghanistan from 1998 for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban Government) and later governments, until retirement in 2008 but continued as a consultant until 2017. He described his major involvement in the development, and rehabilitation after 9/11, of many types of commercial systems including satellite-based mesh, cellular, microwave trunk routes and undersea fibre portals.
He also operated Amateur Radio mostly on 50MHz as YA4F and talked about his experiences there.
Nick's talk was illustrated by many photographs taken all over Afghanistan showing the challenging geography and the microwave towers he designed and erected.
Nick now lives in County Durham and is active on the VHF to microwave bands with a well-equipped station.

16 October 2019 - LRS Autumn Surplus Equipment Sale

The LRS Autumn Surplus Equipment Sale was held on 16th October 2019 at St Fillans Church, Buckstone, with welcome visitors from Cockenzie, Glasgow and Selkirk. There was lots for sale, perhaps too much!
Also a raffle, with interesting "bottles" for prizes.

25 September 2019 - RADAR Technology in Historic Bridge Conservation - meeting at MoC

The annual joint meeting of the LRS and the Museum of Communication at the museum in Burntisland was held on 25th September 2019.
The use of RADAR technology in the conservation of the historic Union Chain Bridge, built in 1820 near Berwick on Tweed, was described by Prof. Emeritus Roland Paxton MBE of the Heriot-Watt University (R) and Dr. Colin Stove, Chairman and Scientific Director of Adrok Ltd (L). This was a great blending of history and cutting-edge engineering technology.
