The Lothians Radio Society was formed in 1947 to serve the City of Edinburgh and the surrounding counties of East, Mid and West Lothian and is affiliated to the RSGB. Our callsign is GM3HAM. Today, as the number of amateurs has increased, both East and West Lothian now support their own clubs. The membership ranges from founding members to the newly licensed. This diverse membership range is responsible for the wide range of interests supported by the society. The core of our activities are the twice-monthly meetings at the Braid Hills Hotel, where we have an excellent series of lectures on Amateur Radio subjects by experts in their field. We have outdoor activities, including portable contests from an excellent site near Gatehouse of Fleet as well as Foxhunts (Direction Finding Competitions), and general operating during the summer season. Several of our members are active in Summits on the Air (SOTA), operating light-weight portable equipment which they carry to the summits of hills in many parts of Scotland. The LRS year, which runs from September to June, includes a “Christmas Curry” at a local Indian restaurant and ends with a barbecue at a member’s home.
Through the membership there is access to a wide range of test equipment and an extensive wealth of knowledge. “Home Brewing” of equipment is actively encouraged. Assistance is readily given to those wish for help in constructing their own station. Please feel free to visit any our meetings which are usually held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month. Our regular venue is The Braid Hills Hotel, Braid Road, Edinburgh, EH10 6JD.
