23-24 Aug 2025 – Montrose Air Station Open Days, Radio Sale & HF Demo Station

Three LRS members – Colin GM4HWO, Bill Dent GM8RBT and Mike GM8KCS attended.

“We are holding the Open day at the Museum on the 23rd and 24th August and the radio section will be putting on an HF demonstration station as well as trying to clear some of the accumulation of bits and pieces which are donated. There was a lot of ex-TA gear, Pye I believe, and an array of Amateur gear: KW2000, KW101ZD, Yaesu 290, Yaesu 690, and even Eddystone 840s. We do have other old radios we will be keeping and hope to get going as exhibits but there are many old vintage parts and components including high voltage transformers. We think one strategy is that people can ask what they need and we can find it. There is whole box of old tuning capacitors. Some newer test gear, an aerial analyser, frequency counter and a modern digital vhf rig. Aerials as well.

“Finally it is a really super place for families to see old planes and modern fighter jets up close. There will be the usual array of burger vans and coffee stalls. We normally open at mid-day but I am uncertain if there are plans to open earlier on the weekend in question.”

The radio section has approx. 10 members. The leader is Ewan Cameron MM0BIX. (He passed the RAE and Morse test in 1968 but was only licenced relatively recently !!
Their member Jon Joyce Gm4JTJ  invited the LRS  to the open day and the radio section surplus sale – Jon is a frequent Tues evening radio  operator with LRS member Pete GM4BYF .
The radio section meets in a re-purposed static caravan on the site of the Air Station Heritage Station.
They meet on Sundays at 2 to 4pm and  they have an operational shack.
They use the callsign GM3 KC – Kilo Charlie and for special events GB2MAS
At the open day on Saturday Aug 23 they were operating using an IC-7400 radio with a Carolin Windom antenna.
The radio section had a surplus sale on Sat / Sunday to reduce the amount of surplus radio equipment it has been storing including several  silent key donations

Spy Set Story (this is the best bit)!

Jon GM4JTJ bought a sandwich tin containing some spy set parts from Peter Bates at the André Saunders GM3VLB silent key table sale in the Galashiels rally – a project André was working on when he passed away. During the COVID lockdown Jon sourced the missing components /  parts  and completed the project. The set works and is displayed now and again.     (Amended text 9/9/25)
