7-8 May 2011 - UHF-Microwave Contest at Gatehouse of Fleet

The GM3HAM Contest Group of the Lothians Radio Society took part in the 2011 RSGB UHF-Microwave Trophy Contest on 7th - 8th May from our usual site on a hilltop near Gatehouse of Fleet. All bands from 432 MHz to 24 GHz were operated under very average conditions. The weather was atrocious at times with very heavy rain but without the high winds that wrecked our station and aerials in VHF NFD last July. The statement that "there's nay coos in the field" was technically correct, but they had been there in force very recently as our boots soon testified!
Claimed scores calculated so far:

At least ten members of the Lothians Radio Society attended the Norbreck Rally in Blackpool on 10 April 2011. Thanks to persistent lobbying by Colin GM4HWO and Brian GM4DIJ the RSGB agreed that the Cockenzie Quaich would be presented to the LRS at this event for our success in winning Top Scottish Club in the Restricted Section of VHF-NFD in 2010. The presentation was made by RSGB President Dave Wilson M0OBW (who was also the Exhibition Manager for this rally - busy man)! The group of LRS members on-stage who had participated in VHF-NFD 2010 were (L-R): Alan GM3PSP, Colin GM4HWO, Mike GM4IGS, Brian GM8BJF and Andy MM0FMF with RSGB President Dave M0OBW. Summits On The Air - UHF Fun Day - 27 March 2011

On Sunday 27 March Summits On The Air (SOTA) enthusiasts organised an informal "UHF fun day" with the aim of getting activators on summits with 70cm and up stations. LRS members Andy MM0FMF (the GM Region Manager for SOTA), and John GM8OTI were up the summits Hart Fell (SOTA reference GM/SS-037), north of Moffat, and Cairnharrow (GM/SS-191), east of Newton Stewart, respectively.
A determined-looking Andy MM0FMF on Hart Fell.
(Or was he just freezing cold)?
Andy MM0FMF was pretty successful including four summit-to-summit contacts on 70cm with the FT-817 and a new home brew beam: GM8OTI/P on Cairnharrow (51 miles), 2M0IOB/P on Ben Donich (79 miles), MM0TAI/P Ben Chonzie (76 miles) and GM4COX/P on Beinn Luibhean. He was also active on HF & 2m.
John GM8OTI's station for 2m, 70cm & 23cm on Cairnharrow.
John GM8OTI had much less success - he had hoped for UHF contacts down into the Lancashire area across the Irish sea, but managed only Andy MM0FMF/P on Hart Fell and GW3GUX/P (not on a summit) on Anglesey, a sea path of 109 miles, not line of sight. Both were on on 70cm. Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), the highest mountain in Wales is just line of sight from Cairnharrow! John was disappointed with no 23cm contacts on the day, and the apparent low level of activity - unusual for SOTA. The Tuesday evening UKAC events are buzzing, in comparison!
Tnx to John GM8OTI for this report.
Report - GM8OTI on 50 MHz UKAC
- Details

LRS Chairman John GM8OTI had a go at the RSGB 50 MHz UK Activity Contest on Tuesday evening, 22nd March. He says that his home QTH is not good (in south Edinburgh, RF noise all around, and the Pentland Hills to the south) but he got his 3-element homebrew yagi up at 12m on a Spiderbeam pole. His station is a Yaesu FT-817 with a homebrew 50W linear, all running on batteries (normally he operates /P).
Not much luck though - three contacts north of the border (best DX was GM4JTJ at 89km, but that was not difficult), and a non-completed QSO with GM4JR in the south of Scotland. One G station was heard (just) working GM4JTJ but could not be raised. The log has been submitted anyway - it gets a few points for the club! John will be out operating /P over the summer from hilltops where he hopes to do better!
Tnx to John GM8OTI for this report.
