From Brian Flynn GM8BJF:
There is a new Scottish 144MHz beacon, GB3JIJ which is located at the north end of the Isle of Lewis, in IO68UL square, in the Outer Hebrides. It runs 10 Watts on 144.407MHz. It sends its callsign and QRA in CW, no MGM! It is a very useful indicator of propagation conditions on account of its relatively remote location. Brian can copy it most of the time at his Edinburgh QTH at about S1 but when there are planes on the path it comes up to about S5.
The call sign was chosen in memory of Jon Hague GM3JIJ who was very active from near Stornoway from the 1970s until his passing in 2021. He was also a RSGB news reader. Brian GM4DIJ and Brian GM8BJF visited him at his cottage in the late-1970s. There are more details of the beacon on GM7PBB, John Gray’s QRZ.com webpage at https://www.qrz.com/db/GM7PBB. which contains a photo of his amazing shack! John is the beaconkeeper and the beacon is located at his QTH.
